Kantana Production Services’ newly-acquired Sony PMW-F5 Super 35mm 4K CMOS sensor compact CineAlta camera in operation.
It all started in 1951 when two brothers started a Thai radio drama troupe. Little did they know that 300 radio drama serials later, the company they set up would evolve into one of Asia’s most renowned entertainment empires serving clients such as 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, Disney Pictures, Columbia Tri-Star, Centro Digital Pictures, Mediacorp Raintree Pictures and Emperor Motion Pictures.
Kantana Group, a publicly-listed company is today the biggest post-production and animation firm in Thailand, a country widely regarded as a high-quality, costefficient hub for film production services, serving clients not only from Southeast Asia and Greater China but also from Japan, Europe and the US.
From its humble origins producing radio drama serials, Kantana has through the years expanded its operations into three core areas: television production, film and post-production, and edutainment. And along the way, it has chalked up an impressive catalogue of achievements such as producing Thailand’s first animated feature, the first studio in Asia to be certified by Dolby Laboratories Inc, the first to establish Thailand’s first private college offering Bachelor of Fine and Applied Arts degree programme in film and animation production and recently, the company to produce Thailand’s first 3D animation movie, Echo Planet.
With Thailand’s reputation as a production and post-production center growing, Kantana has witnessed an increasing demand for both its production and postprodution facilities. Recently, two of Kantana Group’s companies, Kantana Production Services and Kantana Movie Town embarked on a product acquisition drive to keep pace with the rapidly changing production and broadcast market.
Kantana Production Services which services a diverse range of clients covering everything from feature films to television shows, documentaries to music videos, acquired a suite of broadcast equipment for its rental services business. Amongst the Sony products it invested in are PMW-F5
CineAlta 4K camera, HSC-100RF
HD/SD camera, PMW-1000
XDCAM recording deck, MVS-3000A
multi-format switcher, PVM-A170
and A-250 Full HD monitors as well as PVM-741
portable OLED picture monitor.
The acquisitions reflect Kantana’s commitment to delivering innovation and outstanding quality at every stage of the production process. Says Chatchai Roschuen, Senior Manager of Kantana Production Services, “Based on our rental records, many clients ask for Sony cameras which is why we have invested heaviliy on Sony products. Our investments meet both our clients’ currents and future needs.”
A case in point is Kantana’s selection of the Sony HSC-100RF
especially for the local clients. This portable camera offers fibre operation and is adept at both studio and oustide use, and delivers high quality images in both SD and HD.
Sony products are also the preferred choice within Kantana’s internal operations. Kantana Movie Town, considered as one of Southeast Asia’s largets production houses offering both indoor studio as well as outdoor shooting sites, acquired the Sony PMW-400 XDCAM camcorder to support its existing fleet of PMW-EX3 camcorders.
The shoulder-mount PMW-400 is studio configurable, supports XAVC 10-bit HD 422 recordings and with optional software offers Digital Triax and Optical Fibre transmission, a perfect complement for Kantana’s current fleet of five Outside Broadcasting vehicles.
To ensure its internal operations all work seamlessly , both Kantana Production Services and Kantana Movie Town have made XDCAM as the preferred workflow for its main media.
Concludes Chatchai Roschuen, “Our investment in Sony products has re-inforced Kantana’s hardearned repuation as market leaders and innovators. Together with Sony’s excellent after-sales service we are confident that Kantana can look to the future with full confidence.”
